Indonesian Court Orders Drugmakers to Pay for Toxic Cough Syrup

Families Awarded Compensation

An Indonesian court has ruled in favor of families who lost children or who suffered lifelong injuries from toxic cough syrup. The court ordered two local drugmakers to pay each family compensation of up to 60 million rupiah (US$3,850).

The Case

The case involved a cough syrup that was found to contain a harmful chemical. The syrup was produced by two local companies, PT Afi Farma and PT Universal Pharmaceutical Industries.

In 2023, the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) recalled the cough syrup after it was linked to the deaths of several children.

The Court's Decision

The court found that the two companies were negligent in producing and distributing the cough syrup. The court also found that the companies failed to warn consumers about the dangers of the syrup.

As a result, the court ordered the companies to pay compensation to the families of the victims. The compensation includes:

  • 50 million rupiah (US$3,200) for each family who lost a child
  • 10 million rupiah (US$640) for each family who suffered lifelong injuries

The Impact

The court's decision is a significant victory for the families of the victims. The decision sends a message to drugmakers that they will be held accountable for producing and distributing harmful products.

The decision is also likely to have a positive impact on public health in Indonesia. The decision will help to ensure that cough syrup and other drugs are safe for consumers.
